Shifting Contexts
The fact that I could even start pursuing methods of creative strategies in choreography, relieved of the immense burden of a daily struggle with bureaucracy, meant to me a deeper opening to the medium of contemporary dance. In “Under Construction '' for the first time I could fully dedicate my time to experiment with the choreography as a medium. There I jux posed the two contexts: black room of the theatre space and white room of the exhibition space. Further on, in the work “Live to tape,a Stll moving talk show”, I experimented with shifting the televisual format of a talk show into the theatre stage context. These two experimental works were very important for laying out the ground stones of my choreographic method and praxis, where before starting with the movement research, I first work on the question of the context in which the performers will have to navigate throughout the piece. Sometimes we create a fictional theatrical context where the performers are acting as performers, or dancers and are often displaced from this context. But more often I like to keep the context of the theatre stage and create characters for the performers that alienates them from that same context. This is a much more fun process, and it allows a lot of humour, which is of strong importance for me, as well during the creative process, as in the work itself.
